Navigating

There are several ways in which you could navigate through the subreddits of Reddit, which are: Searching, Browsing, and Adding subreddits to the Home-Page (also known as front page.)

Search

One important way to navigate the subreddits is by using the Search Bar. To use this navigation tool, you do not need to have an account.

  1. In order to search for subreddits, first click “MORE>>” (if you are not logged in) or “EDIT>>” (if you are logged in) at the most upper right hand corner of the page
  2. Next, find the search bar located on the upper left hand side of the page  where it says “search reddit”
  3. Then type in your inquiry for your subreddit and hit enter and the search results will appear.

If you want to search for individual articles you still do not need an account, but will need to do the following:

  1. Go to the homepage: http://www.Reddit.com or find the Reddit Logo at the upper left corner of the page and click it.
  2. Next, find the search bar located on the upper right hand of the page where it says “search reddit”
  3. Then type your inquiry to search all of Reddit for your inquiry.  You can also narrow your search to the following:
  • the full text of self posts
  • the URL & domain
  • the author’s username
  • the name of the reddit where it was posted
  • if it is a self post or not
  • if it’s NSFW(Not-Safe-For-Work)

In order to narrow your search to these fields, however, extra syntax is required. This is illustrated by the following:

  • reddit:{subreddit} – Narrows your search to subreddits
  • author:{username} – Narrows your search to authors
  • site:{domain} – Narrows your search to the specified domains or subdomains
  • url:{text} – Narrows your search to the text that is in the URL
  • selftext:{text} – Narrows your search to text in text post contents
  • is_self:{yes|no} – Narrows your search to self posts
  • over18:{yes|no} – Narrows your search to NSFW subreddits

You can also combine fields by separating the different fields by a space. For example, you can search for:

reddit:pics is_self:yes

These additional fields can also be combined with regular search terms. To find posts about “reddit” by ketralnis:

reddit author:ketralnis

Another example would be if you are searching for “reddit” posts by the author ketralnis in the /r/programming reddit, it would look something like this:

reddit author:ketralnis reddit:programming

Also, to search for posts by either raldi or ketralnis use parenthesis and separate each field with OR:

reddit (author:ketralnis OR author:raldi)

Browse

Another way that you can navigate through the subreddits is by way of browsing.

You are able to navigate through the subreddits by browsing through different categories, such as Science, Politics, World News, Technology, and many others. These subreddits are located at the top of the page above the Reddit logo.

You are also able to browse Reddit through other categories, displayed at the top of the page immediately below the Reddit logo.

  • What’s Hot: displays a combination of the Top and the New categories.
  • New: displays the most recent submissions first, regardless of their score.
  • Controversial: displays the most controversial submissions.
  • Top: displays a listing of the highest scoring submissions to Reddit, regardless of their age.
  • Saved: displays all of the submissions that you have clicked save on. (You must have an account and be logged in)

Adding subreddits to Your Home-Page

The purpose of adding subreddits to your home-page (front page) is to have them more easily accessible and to have articles of interest appear on your home-page. You must, however, have an account and be logged in in order to personalize your Reddit homepage with the subreddits of your choice. There are two ways that you can add subreddits to your home-page.

First Method:

  1. The first way to add subreddits to your homepage is to search for or browse through (explained above) subreddits to find those that you would like to add to your homepage.
  2. Once on the subreddit page, on the right hand side of the page there should be an option (either green or red)  to add or remove the subreddit to or from your front page.
  3. If the button is green, click it to add it to your home-page. If it is red, it means that it is already on your home-page and if you’d like to remove it simply click the red button.

Second Method

  1. The second way to add subreddits to your homepage is to first click “EDIT>>” at the most upper right hand corner of the page
  2. A list of popular subreddits will then appear under instructions on how to add them to your home-page (front page,) near the top of the page. Again, if the button is green then click it to add it to your home-page. If it is red, it means that it is already on your home-page and if you’d like to remove it then just click the red button.
